Salon waxing is a fantastic way to cut back on shaving, get smooth skin and indulge a little. It’s nice to let someone else do all the work, but there are some things visitors should do before the day of their waxing appointment. Making sure to follow these tips will help ensure that the appointment goes smoothly.
1. Grow Out the Hair
In order for wax to grab hair and pull it out by its roots, there has to be some visible hair. The general rule is to let the hair grow for two to three weeks. An eighth to a quarter of an inch of hair is perfect for the wax to grab. Any longer and there is a risk of the waxing being more painful than necessary.
2. Avoid Creams With Retin-A
While retin-A is wonderful for acne and other skin conditions, it makes the skin more prone to damage. Do not use any creams containing retin-A for about two weeks before a body waxing appointment to avoid injury.
Whether the appointment is for facial waxing, Brazilian waxing or everything in-between, gently exfoliate the skin the day before an appointment. Gentle is the operative word; heavily exfoliated skin is sensitive.
Use moisturizer on the areas to be waxed all the way up to the day before a waxing appointment. This helps the skin pull away from the wax easily. However, overdoing it or waxing on the day of the appointment can make it harder for the wax to adhere to the hair.
5. Look for Skin Problems
Just before a waxing appointment, check the skin for signs of breakage or sensitivity. It is not safe to wax skin that is broken or irritated. Not only can it lead to further damage, it can also promote infections. Wait until the skin heals to wax.
Make sure to keep the bikini area very clean before and after waxing. This is true for facial waxing too, but especially true for Brazilian waxing, which affects a moist area that is susceptible to chafing. Moist, damaged skin is much more prone to bacterial growth.
